1Catalogue

How the OTC catalogue is organised

Every item is a product with a brand, a category and a unit. Products that come in sizes, counts or shades get variations, and each variation has its own barcode, price and stock.

Examples only. Your categories are your own.
CategoryTypical variationsWhy it matters at the register
Pain & allergyCount (24/50/100), strengthEach pack scans to the right price and stock line.
Vitamins & supplementsCount, form (tablet, gummy)Reorder by the variation that actually sells.
Skin & sun careSize, SPFShelf labels show the right size and price.
CosmeticsShadeStock per shade, so the empty peg is visible in reports.

2Barcodes & labels

Barcodes and shelf labels

Scan the barcode already on the pack to attach it to the product. For anything without one, generate an internal barcode and print a label. Shelf labels print from the same record, so the shelf and the register always agree.

Works well for

  • Re-labelling after a supplier price change
  • Seasonal gift lines without UPCs
  • Shelf-edge labels by category or aisle

Watch out for

  • Duplicate UPCs between pack sizes: give each variation its own code
  • Label stock size: set the template to your printer's labels

3Prices

Price groups, discounts and tax

Hold several prices per product with selling-price groups, run date-limited discounts by brand or category, and attach the right tax rate to each item so mixed baskets total correctly.

  • Selling-price groups — staff price, care-home price, wholesale to a clinic.
  • Discounts — percentage or fixed, by product, brand or category, per location, with start and end dates.
  • Tax rates and groups — taxable and exempt items in one basket; tax shown on the receipt the way your market expects.
  • Permissions — decide which staff can change prices or give manual discounts at the register.

4Questions

OTC and health & beauty questions

Can one product have several sizes or pack counts?

Works today

Yes. Variations let one product carry sizes, pack counts, scents or shades, each with its own barcode, price and stock.

Full answerHide full answer

For example, one allergy tablet product can have 10-, 30- and 90-count variations, each scanned by its own UPC. Reports show the product total and each variation.

Will it read the barcodes already on OTC packs?

Works today

Yes. Scan the existing UPC/EAN on the pack into the product, then every later scan finds it.

Items without a barcode (loose gifts, cards from local suppliers) can be given an internal barcode and labelled from the label printer.

Can I print shelf labels with price and barcode?

Works today

Yes. Choose products, a label size and what to print (name, price, barcode, unit), then print to a label printer or label sheets.

Full answerHide full answer

Reprint after a price change by selecting the changed products. Label templates are set per business.

Can I set different prices for different customers?

Works today

Yes. Selling-price groups let you hold, for example, a staff price or a care-home price next to the regular price.

Full answerHide full answer

Assign a price group to a customer group, and the price is applied at the register when that customer is selected.

How are taxes handled on OTC items?

Works today

Each product carries a tax rate or tax group, so taxable and exempt items can sit in the same basket.

Full answerHide full answer

In the US, sales-tax treatment of OTC drugs and personal-care items varies by state; set the rates your state requires. In the UAE most retail items carry 5% VAT; in Pakistan apply the sales-tax rates that apply to you. We do not give tax advice.

Can I run promotions like buy-one-get-one?

Works today

You can set discounts by product, brand or category, for a date range and per location.

Full answerHide full answer

Percentage and fixed discounts are supported, and staff can be allowed or blocked from giving manual discounts at the register.

Can I import my catalogue from a spreadsheet?

Works today

Yes. A CSV/Excel import brings in names, SKUs, barcodes, brands, categories, units, prices, tax and opening stock.

Full answerHide full answer

Most pharmacies export a product list from their current system or supplier and map the columns to the template.

Does it flag FSA/HSA-eligible OTC items?

Planned

Not yet. Flagging items against the SIGIS Eligible Product List is part of the planned FSA/HSA feature.

Full answerHide full answer

Until then, FSA/HSA cards should only be taken on a setup your processor supports. See planned FSA/HSA.

Can I sell age-restricted items?

You can mark items so staff check ID, but the legal duty stays with you and your local rules.

Full answerHide full answer

Some OTC products are restricted by age or quantity in some markets. Follow your state, emirate or provincial rules; the POS is a tool, not a compliance service.
